the curated winter capsule wardrobe: men edition
18 pieces that every man needs
Last week, I wrote a post on a winter capsule wardrobe for women, and I wanted to create a men’s version as well. I find that men, more often than not, have a harder time shopping for clothes or figuring out what styles they truly like. Because of this, I created this guide to make finding those essential pieces simple and approachable.
Here are 18 pieces that any man would need—and enjoy wearing—during the winter months :)
coats and jackets
In any winter capsule wardrobe, a wool coat is always an essential. It’s a great investment because it will last for many years and works beautifully for layering. Wool coats are timeless pieces that will never go out of style. You can wear them while running errands, going to meetings, or even grabbing dinner with friends. As for length, it comes down to personal preference since there are many options available, but for winter, coats that fall to the knees or ankles are usually best.
A puffer jacket is another winter staple. It’s ideal for extremely cold weather and even snow. Just make sure it’s waterproof or at least water-resistant, especially if it rains or snow melts, so it doesn’t damage the jacket. You can wear a puffer jacket with almost anything—shirts, sweaters, trousers, or sweatpants. When it comes to color, black is always a safe choice since it goes with everything, but a pop of color can add a fun element to your outfit.
Having an additional jacket in your winter wardrobe is ideal, and a parka is a great option. Parkas are designed for cold climates and are typically insulated, wind-resistant, and water-resistant. While they’re highly functional, they’re also stylish, as their modern and sleek design can elevate a simple outfit. Parkas are especially practical because they tend to have multiple pockets, allowing you to safely store your belongings during outdoor activities. A functional yet fashionable jacket like a parka is perfect for a winter capsule wardrobe.
sweaters, sweatshirts and hoodies
If there is one outer layer you need during winter, it’s a good sweater. The style of sweater comes down to personal preference, but two great and timeless options are a crewneck and a collared sweater. They’re easy to dress up for meeting friends or attending something a bit more formal, especially when paired with tailored trousers and polished shoes. When it comes to fabrics, opt for cashmere, merino wool, or cotton, as these are natural fibers that will last for many years—perfect for a capsule wardrobe.
Another vital piece in a winter capsule wardrobe is a sweatshirt. Sweatshirts are extremely versatile and provide both comfort and warmth. You can wear one over a shirt or layer it underneath jackets, making it an excellent layering piece. I recommend choosing a relaxed fit for added comfort and ease when layering. For colors, black, gray, and white are ideal, as they pair effortlessly with other pieces in your wardrobe.
A hoodie is also a great addition to a winter capsule wardrobe. It offers warmth and comfort while still looking stylish. I suggest choosing one that hits right at the hips or slightly above, as this helps with proportions. It’s also worth opting for a hoodie with relaxed, loose ribbing at the hem, since more fitted ribbing can be harder to style.
shirts
Long-sleeve shirts are a must-have in a winter capsule wardrobe. They make an excellent base layer and are thin enough that, when worn indoors, you won’t overheat. Having three basic colors—white, black, and gray—is perfect, as they’re easy to mix and match for layering. If you’d like to experiment with additional colors, deeper shades such as navy, espresso, and forest green are great options.
A button-up shirt is another piece that works beautifully in a winter capsule wardrobe. I recommend choosing a thicker fabric, such as corduroy or flannel. These are great for layering, as you can wear them over a long or short-sleeve shirt and underneath a jacket.
Another essential is a henley shirt. Henleys are designed to be breathable and comfortable, making them perfect for winter layering under jackets or oversized sweaters. For an elevated look and extra warmth, a waffle-knit henley is an excellent choice.
bottoms
Jeans are the perfect bottoms no matter the season. For winter, darker washes tend to look better and help conceal dirt from streets and snow. A relaxed fit is ideal during colder months, especially if you’re wearing thicker boots—it’s not so baggy that cold air gets in, but not so tight that it feels uncomfortable.
Another pair of bottoms that are great to have in a capsule wardrobe, especially during winter, are trousers. These are ideal for more formal occasions, meetings, or events. They can easily be dressed up and still look polished when paired with simpler pieces. Opting for trousers with a bit more structure will enhance their timeless and sophisticated feel.
Khaki pants are another excellent option for a winter capsule wardrobe. They can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. You can pair them with a polished sweater and dress shoes, or keep things casual with a sweatshirt and sneakers—either way works beautifully! Look for khaki pants in a relaxed or loose fit, as they pair best with winter layers.
shoes
Snow boots are an essential part of a winter capsule wardrobe. They’re the best option for walking around, especially if you live in an area with heavy snow or icy conditions. Look for boots with good insulation and waterproof materials to keep your feet warm and dry. Many people recommend wearing merino wool socks with snow boots, as they provide excellent warmth and moisture control.
Having an additional pair of boots for winter is also ideal, as they’re perfect for everyday wear or outings. These boots can still provide warmth without being as bulky as snow boots. Leather boots are a great option, as they’re versatile and look stylish no matter what you pair them with.
Sneakers are a necessary staple in any capsule wardrobe. For winter, I recommend choosing sneakers with a grippier or thicker sole to help with traction. If it rains or there’s ice, this can reduce the risk of slipping. When it comes to color, it’s all about personal preference—whether you prefer classic black or something more bold, whatever makes you feel most confident will work perfectly.
accessories
A traditional beanie is a must-have during winter. It’s a timeless accessory that will never go out of style and can last for many years. Wool is the best fabric choice, as it’s a natural fiber and water-resistant. When it comes to color, you can opt for something vibrant to add a pop of color, or choose classic shades like black, brown, or cream for a more timeless look.
Gloves are another essential item in a winter capsule wardrobe. For a polished and stylish option, leather gloves with a soft, warm lining work best. If you live in a particularly cold climate, mittens are an ideal choice, as they retain warmth more effectively.
Scarves are a perfect winter accessory for everyone. With so many styles to choose from—long, short, thick, or thin—it’s best to select one that suits your climate and lifestyle. For winter, opt for warm fabrics such as wool, cashmere, or alpaca to stay comfortable and cozy.
